Amazon Kindle DX ebook Reader
Those who love the Kindle but find it cumbersome when reading larger publications, like magazines or books, will love the recently released Kindle DX. This nine-inch Kindle is a wireless reading device much like the original Kindle, but with several new features and a larger design.
Features of the Kindle DX
The Kindle DX has a 9.7-inch E-ink screen that displays at a 1200 x 824 resolution in 16 shades of gray. The screen is over twice the size of a standard Kindle, making the device much more friendly for those who have trouble reading small print. Even with this large screen, the device is just a third of an inch thick, no thicker than a standard magazine. The storage space is increased to 4 GB, which gives it room to hold 3,500 books and other publications.
A built-in reader allows for PDF support on the Kindle DX. The device can also automatically determine the length of the text on the screen and make adjustments so the text fits neatly into the reading area. It features EVDO, which allows for books to transfer wirelessly to the device in just 60 seconds.
One new feature found on the Kindle DX that is not found on the standard Kindle is the automatic landscape/portrait text rotation. All you need to do to adjust the screen from landscape mode to portrait mode is rotate. The device automatically configures to the way you are holding it, turning the text as needed. This is similar to the technology found in many smartphones, and a big upgrade over the standard Kindle.
The battery life on the Kindle DX is not specified, but the manufacturer claims that you can read for several days without recharging. The length of time the battery will last depends largely on the amount of use the wireless reading device gets.
How It Works
The Kindle DX allows you to download books on the 3G wireless network anywhere you are, even if Wi-Fi is not available. You simply access the Kindle Store on the device using the controls on the right hand side of the screen, pick the material you want to read, and download. New releases and New York Times best sellers are typically priced at $9.99. You can even download popular blogs to the Kindle to read on the go. The Kindle DX even has a text-to-speech feature, which allows the device to read the book, newspaper, magazine, or other media out loud to you.
Potential Uses
In addition to the standard use of the Kindle, which is reading books on a portable wireless device, the Kindle DX opens the door to many new uses. When the device was first introduced, the New York Times and several other prominent newspapers and periodicals offered a Kindle-based subscription service to people who lived outside of the delivery area. Textbooks are now offered in the Kindle Store, and five colleges offered students the option to use Kindle DX-based textbooks in the fall 2009 semester. These innovative uses are all made possible as a result of the larger screen and user-friendly upgrades of the new Kindle DX
